7 days ago I decided to start a fat loss plan. 4 days ago, my wife and I went to New Orleans for our 3 year anniversary.
I always pick the best times to start a diet.
Between the beignets, bread, and the truck loads of booze, one would think the fat loss plan would be thrown in the trash... at least until I got back from vacation.
But I managed to enjoy all the foods listed above (and then some) while staying relatively on track with my diet. And it was easy.
I have a philosophy on vacation nutrition, and it's about the balance between these two points:
1. Eat the local food. You're crazy if you go to NOLA and don't eat some beignets, just like you must eat the pizza if you go to Chicago, and so on.
2. Every meal doesn't need to be a throwaway. Nail your nutrition most of the time.
If I went to NOLA and stayed 100% on point with my diet, I would have missed out on a lot of great food.
But if I ate everything in sight, I would have done some major damage to my fat loss progress. Not to mention, after enough alcohol and pastries your body starts to get angry. When your body's angry, you don't have a good time.
Too often we see things as black and white. The diet is either 'on' or it's 'off'.
When travelling, being 100% 'on' is unrealistic. You also miss out on some of the best aspects of the trip, which is lame.
But being 100% 'off' is devastating to your waistline. And being a bloated, tired mess is even more lame than being a diet Nazi.
So when you're on vacation, eat high quality food most of the time. But eat whatever you want some of the time.
Strike that balance, and you'll have a better vacation, a tighter waistline, and a happier gut.
